Why Mick's Up With Fasting?

UPDATE:  I have done more research to confirm that long-term fasting is easier on men's systems than on women's.  So, please beware, if you are a lady wishing to attempt fasting.  If your body is sensitive to drastic drops in calories, be mindful, and listen to your body.  There is a range of seriousness associated with its possible side effects, from mild alterations in monthly schedule, to severe in terms of causing premature menopause.  Again, ladies, listen to your body, be informed through research, and be kind to your body.  That is not to say that there is no good fasting.  This is just a warning of side effects.

I was reading about the advantages of fasting, and after 3 days (only water and no more than 15-20 calories per day, which means like lemons and stevia are it... no more!), there are a lot of great benefits.

So...
Yes, I have done better, but am still not totally maximized in my living.  The family is even more on board now.  When some issues that are more than just minor ones pop up, it gets people's attention.  It's not great, but it is a good thing to get someone motivated to do better
Water and Lemon: That's it.
I decided to try a fast... at the start of the new year... and to invite the family (mainly the hubby) to participate.  We did it!  Well, we aimed for 5 days, out of the blue, without ever doing it before and without prepping (not recommended!), and we made it through 3 days!  Wow!  Even though I expected to make it through 5 days, I am so pleased that we made it 3.

Don't get me wrong.  There are benefits to any amount of fasting, but some major ones start kicking it at 3 days, and continue to do more and more for the body through 5 days, which is why I had that goal.  I was happy to know, though, that nothing was wasted when our attempt ended with the 3 day fast.

Where I did the research for the fast was through Dr. Jockers' website.  I follow him on social media, and I saw some interesting things coming through in his posts.

He was even part of a Fasting Lifestyle Summit recently.

I recommend everyone take a look at the informationDo the research.  See if it is something that you consider beneficial to your body and your health.

A few reasons for my desperate attempt are:

  1. I want to fit nicely in my Mother-of-the-Groom dress in May, and look a bit more healthy, fit, and even younger.
  2. A major milestone is coming at the end of the summer, and being a fit and healthy 50-year-old is as big a goal for me as 40 was, when I was first introduced to this Maximized Living info.
  3. Hubby has lots of issues, which are not being properly handled, and so this was a shot in the dark, wondering if something so drastic could shift his mindset.
Are you at a point of desperation?  Maybe you could try something new.

Many wishes to you for a great year and great successes!

Now, it's time for me to prepare for my February fast!

“When you fast,
do not look somber as the hypocrites do,
for they disfigure their faces
to show others they are fasting.
Truly I tell you,
they have received their reward in full."

An Honest Mick's up

am human... Just thought I'd clear that up.

I want to be honest about being normal...  (after all, I did only learn this lifestyle stuff a few years ago)... and I want to share some things to encourage you.
ML Nutrition Plan book

There's nothing juicy here, just some simple truth about every day life.

Ready?  Here it goes.

Healthy eating takes work.

Surprised?  Probably not.

My secret?  I hate that healthy eating takes work.  I am a scheduler, but I hate meal planning.  Do you despise planning meals, too?

I really, truly wish I didn't have to pack lunches every day of the school year (but I do it to offer the healthiest options possible to my children).   I know, I know:  Someday, too soon, I'll be an empty-nester and wishing I still had kidderz at home to pack lunches for.  I'll try to remember that and not complain.

I wish I didn't have to cook breakfast and dinner every day, trying to please the family, while keeping things healthy and simple, feeling like the only thing accomplished for the day is feeding everyone.  Then comes the dreaded phrase, "We're having that, again?"  (I guess that means I need to add a bit more variety, which, again, takes work.)

I remember what it was like when we didn't know better.  True, I still had to come up with ideas of what we'd eat each day, but buying something pre-made or mostly made was a lot easier than cooking from scratch... and it is the normal thing to do.

It's not that people aren't smart or are too lazy, but some families haven't gotten all the information they need to make wiser choices.. like us in the past.  We consumed more processed foods back then.  I thought we were making healthy choices, but I didn't know then what I know now.

Sometimes I wish I still didn't know the dangers.  Sometimes I wish life was easier.

However, there ARE simple and quick recipes that ARE healthy AND tasty.  In fact, I use more spices now than I have our entire married life to this point.  There are some mighty delicious recipes that we can prepare without adding all kinds of junk... and the family approves them.

Please note:  I am not an amazing cook, by any stretch of the imagination.  There is nothing exceptional about my work in the kitchen.  Anyone can do what I do.  Follow a good recipe, and you'll surprise yourself!

I am also not a great baker (really not very good at all).  I always said I'd have to hire my brother to be my baker and gardener, because he was born with those skills and I wasn't.

I can follow a recipe, and if I find something that works for my family, it's a staple.

However, without using "normal" flour and sugar, things aren't working out so easy for me.  Sure, I share yummy recipes I come across... but I can't always get them to look and/or taste nice.

There are many wonderfully talented bakers and cooks out there, and I recommend you look up recipes and tips from them... such nutritionists as:
Elise Scwartz
Kimberly Roberto
Lin Hardick

Though I am not a nutrionist, nor officially certified in anything, I was trained in nutrition and fitness in three different (awesome) jobs, receiving job-specific certification in nutrition and fitness for one of those companies.

The reason I started this blog was to continue the coaching that I was enjoying so much at that office.  Yes, I was a nutrition coach... and to this day, if you sincerely ask me, I'll be glad to give you some pointers.

People look for someone they can use as an easy resource for these things... someone who is (or has been) where they are, understanding the challenges and frustrations.

It was mostly moms asking for help in the office, and so some of my writing (No, I am not a mommy blogger!) might tend toward moms.  However, it's not just moms that need to be informed.

It's important for everyone to stop believing the lies, and take a different angle to managing health... to be empowered!

One way our family has done this is by considering our chiropractor as our main doctor.

Our plan is to use our physician for crisis care only.  You know: if an arm is falling off, or blood is involved somehow.

Years ago, my kidderz were at the physician's office a lot, and they were prescribed medicine all the time... but... since late 2010, I have not bought any medicines for them, and that means we have not used any over-the-counter pain relievers nor cold medicines.  That's nearly THREE YEARS!  For two adults who popped ibuprofen at the slightest discomfort, that's a major deal!  3 Years!

However.... here comes another secret... more honesty...
As I explain in Our Crazy Mick's up Summer, that summer we had a few strange issues in our family, and I cracked.  I admit it!

I was desperate to get relief from my poison rash that had spread to every limb.  Realizing the aloe wasn't allowing it to dry, and without doing any research, I bought the only thing I knew (because of childhood experiences): Calamine Lotion.  Since then, I looked up information to find that our parents and grandparents certainly did OK by that.  Whew!

However, I'm not so happy with my decisions for my son's swimmer's ear.

I became a normal mom, wanting to do whatever was necessary to make my "baby" feel better.

First, I tried my best to use home remedies, like peroxide, rubbing alcohol, garlic and olive oil.

Then, worrying myself silly, I took my son to the physician.

My main concern was to be sure his ear was not being damaged.

I was relieved to find out everything was fine, besides the fact that he had inflammation and pain.

However, the doctor prescribed antibiotic/steroid drops for the ear.

I fought myself over the decision to buy or not to buy.  Much against my better judgment, I gave in to the medical model, and I paid way too much money for something that ended up just sitting unused.

OK... I confess: I did put a drop in his ear that first day or two, but after that, the medicine just sat, and my son was absolutely fine without it.

Am I proud of this decision?  No.  Am I embarrassed?  Yes.  Would I make that same decision again?  No.

Do I understand moms and their worries?  Yes.  I'll say it again:  Yes!

So, please take heart that we are all human, and we might make mistakes now and then...  but we must move on and seek wisdom and discernment in all situations to make the best decisions we can make for our families.

... Oh, and I cheat, too.  It's not much of a secret, but since I'm being honest here...
I still like my cheats: chocolate once in a while, and pizza ANY time (my downfall!).

The difference now versus before healthy living?  At least now I know with cheats come consequences, and I prepare myself for those consequences:  stuffy nose and sinus issues, headaches, stiff joints, tight muscles, grumpiness, fatigue, lower performance in exercise, slower brain function, and maybe even weakening my immune system to the point of allowing a cold to take over my body.

Because I know what'll happen, I do my best to only enjoy these cheats at times when I am not needing to be at "the top of my game..." and that is usually only once or twice per week, at the most.

Do you have some things to be honest with yourself about?  Do you have some guilt for some wrong decisions?  Stop worrying about them.  Face them.  Get back up.  Then move on.  You will learn from those mistakes, and who knows... you might just be able to help someone else because of what you went through.

"We lose our way. We get back up again.
It's never too late to get back up again.
One day you will shine again.
You may be knocked down, but not out forever."

A Re-Mick's in the Fog

(First posted October 11, 2011)

Have you felt like you’re not as sharp as you used to be? Do you feel fatigued? Are you wondering why you’re in slow-motion, while the world is moving faster than ever?

You might be dealing with Brain Fog.

Some of the symptoms of Brain Fog are (Brain Fog is Real and is a Common Symptom - by Lisa Cruz):
  • Lack of focusIn a Fog...
  • Forgetfulness
  • Loss of mental acuity
  • Decreased mental stamina
  • Decrease in creativity
  • Confusion
  • Lack of spatial awareness
  • Absentmindedness or spaciness
  • Decreased attention span
  • Decreased short term memory
  • Difficulty finding words

What can cause it?

Dr. Lawrence Wilson defines Brain Fog as “feelings of mental confusion or lack of mental clarity.” (BRAIN FOG by Lawrence Wilson, MD) He goes on to say nutrition and lifestyle are the beginning of the solution to the problem of Brain Fog, which has many causes.

Toxicity is one of the main causes. We are bombarded by toxins every day, everywhere we turn. Heavy metal toxicity not only causes Brain Fog, but it can also produce other chronic conditions such as Autism, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Depression, Multiple Sclerosis, and a host of other serious disorders.

What can you do about it?

Getting regular chiropractic care to keep the signal passages clear from the brain to the rest of the body… getting exercise to increase oxygen… getting the right nutrients in your body… and getting away from toxins as much as possible… if all working together, will help to clear up brain fog. (Again, it’s the simple lifestyle of incorporating the idea of 5 Essentials for healthy living.)

The way my family has decided to deal with toxins in the body is with a product called Daily Detox. I am not advertising. I don’t get any kick-backs by telling you about it. There are other products out there, and maybe there are even some very similar to it, but I’m just letting you know what I found out about this one. It’s not a periodic cleanse. It’s not a fad. It’s not a fast. The product has recently changed a little bit, with the inclusion of a new manufacturer, however the idea of it is that it includes a vitamin B complex and a glutathione enhancer (the most powerful antioxidant naturally produced in the body) to give your body’s natural detoxing system a boost (using such ingredients as milk thistle). With this detox system, the toxins are drawn from the cells… and as a side note, proper nutrition allows for healthy cell walls to have a more efficient process of getting bad things out and good things in. So it’s a cleanse at the cellular level. It also has activated carbon, which acts as a magnet, drawing toxins to it. Then, since the body cannot process it, the carbon and the toxins are totally eliminated from the body.
When toxins are eliminated, your body can start to heal, and your thinking can become clearer.

100B1030Depending on the toxicity and acidity levels of the body, the healing process will happen at different rates for different people. It’s a process, so be patient. If you’re really serious about healing, be sure to improve everything together: attitude, nutrition, exercise, spine/nerve system care, while working on decreasing toxicity.

I’ve seen it happen! I’ve witnessed Brain Fog clear up! It is possible! My husband can testify to it!

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. The fog can lift!

“Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,
set your hope on the grace to be brought to you
when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.”

Mick’s up in the Eggnog

While we talk about staying healthy this Christmastide, we don’t want to miss out on the holiday treats, right?!Yummy Holiday Treats!  You’re probably saying, “Who wants to think about diet and nutrition now?  Save it for the New Year’s Resolutions!

There are alternatives, if you do want to enjoy sweets without the negative effects of sugar and artificial sweeteners.  There are great resources out there, like those listed in the left margin, categorized as the food blogs I follow.  One amazing example is Healing Cuisine by Elise.  In fact, she entered a recipe in the Gluten-free Cookie Swap.  (She’d love it, if you’d vote for her.)

Another possibility is downloading a FREE Holiday Recipes eCookbook, when you “like” Maxmized Living on Facebook.  Also, at McCoy Fitness, you can pick up your FREE Clean Zone Diet Cookbook!

As was mentioned in Mick’s up Merry, you should go ahead and plan to have some good ole sweets, etc., but the key is to plan.  “If you typically ‘pig out’ once per week,  hold off and do it every two.  Have a blast and eat like it’s your last meal for 3-4 meals (not days)!”

I’ll leave you with this recipe for eggnog.  Yummy!!

Super Easy Egg Nog  (1 serving)
This is an individual serving size of eggnog. It is quick and easy, healthy and a great treat especially during the holidays.

Ingredients 1 whole egg
½ cup pine nuts or chopped pecans (optional)
¼ teaspoon organic vanilla
¼-½ teaspoon stevia or xylitol, or to taste
1 cup coconut milk
Nutmeg to taste
1 pinch sea salt

Directions Beat the egg with the sweetener of your choice along with salt. Pour into a glass. Add vanilla and
milk and stir to mix. Sprinkle a little ground nutmeg on top.

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Mick’s up on Fuel

Sticking to this week’s focus on sugar addiction, let’s see if carbs (aka sugars) are good fuel for exercise.

You’ve probably heard a coach or health source recommend loading up on carbs before a big game or workout.  The reason for that is to have enough energy stored up to get you through the event.  After looking further into this, you might decide it’s not as great an idea as it used to seem.

Nutrition for Peak Performance (Webinar)
In a Maximized Living Webinar on Nutrition for Peak Performance, Dr. Fred Roberto points out “for all athletes:  The fact of the matter is food does matter.  It is critically important.  Food is your fuel, and food runs the human engine, and so we have to take and convert this quality food into fuel that can then get transferred into an energy source, and that's what really runs human performance.  We want optimum performance.  The human engine is amazing.  It's a high-performance engine.  It needs to run on high-octane fuel.  You simply don't put diesel fuel inside a race car.  It just gunks up the engine.  Your body requires high-octane, quality food just the same....  It's not really a game of calories in versus calories out, as most people would think.  There's so much more to the story.  You've got to put good, quality calories inside of your body.  When you put in the food that is designed for your body to run on, your body can run so much more efficiently and effectively.”

In that same webinar, Dr. BJ Hardick warns us to “only use carbohydrates that our body is actually going to utilize.  Don't overdo it on carbohydrates, if our body is not going to utilize them.”

Dr. Roberto explains that what we want are Medium Chain Fatty Acids, like coconut oil, because they “are an excellent source of energy (used immediately for energy)... and provide the energy without all the negative effects sugar has in the body.”

He points out that consuming sugar triggers insulin, and insulin has an adverse affect on HGH (Human Growth Hormone), which is a hormone we like to spike because with exercise... for increasing lean muscle.

Dr. Roberto continues: “Foods containing processed carbs and sugars...  are anti-nutrients... The body still needs the elements, and so pulls from its stores... not to mention... these greatly reduce your PH and make your body more acidic.  Having a proper PH balance is critical for sports performance and recovery time.... That's where performance happens: at the cellular level.”

So, what is recommended is:  low-glycemic, high-fiber carbs = veggies = high energy

Instead of sports drinks, reach for some coconut water. It is a great source of electrolytes (15x more potassium than other sports drinks).  It might still have sugar, but it’s alkaline!  Dr. Hardick warns us that the glycemic index is not the only thing to look at.  We need to know whether or not what we’re taking in is causing inflammation and whether or not it causes our body to be acidic.  Remember, alkaline is better for our cells, which is where performance really happens.

Dr. Hardick clarifies that only really long duration exercise benefits from a good helping of healthy grains the day before (ie Ezekiel Bread).  Then during exercise, concentrate on low-glycemic, easily absorbable and digestable things like coconut water.

Now that you're fueled up, go for it!

...my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—
the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

It's a Mick's up

Beware of Toxins!I like patterns and consistency.  So, Mick’s up Life is designed to follow a pattern.  You’ve probably already noticed it, but in case you haven’t, I’ll list it out.  This might make it easier for you to follow where I’m going with each week’s posts.

Monday – Inspirational, Encouragement, Limiting Beliefs, Goal Setting, Maximized Mind
Tuesday – Chiropractic Care, Spine Health, Maximized Nerve Supply
Wednesday – Food, Grocery Shopping, Meals, Maximized Nutrition
Thursday – Exercise, Workouts, Maximized Oxygen & Lean Muscle
Friday – Toxicity, Environment, Minimize Toxins

So, in honor of the Friday topic, I want to point out the fact that we need to be aware of toxins beyond chemical and environmental. We must also beware of toxins of the mind.  Yes, this touches on the Monday topic of building up the mind.  However, in light of events happening in recent days, we must realize that taking in too much news from the radio and TV can be hazardous to our health.

That is not to say all journalists and people in the news business are doing bad things.  I have some close family and friends in those careers.  There are others, however, who glamorize negativity, and sometimes the media gets carried away. If we allow ourselves to get caught up in it, then we risk adding unnecessary stress to our lives.

Granted, my husband and I tend the other extreme, and don’t watch any news or TV, and we rarely listen to live radio.  I’m not saying this extreme is totally healthy, either, but at least that’s one less stress in our lives.

On that note, find some peaceful time to spend with your family this weekend. Turn off the TV.  Play DJ, and spin your own hits, instead of getting live feed on the radio.  Read a good book… maybe even as a family.  Better yet, read the Bible.  You can’t find any better peace than that found when cradled in the arms of God’s love.  Enjoy!

How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
who bring good tidings,
who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
“Your God reigns!”

Mick’s in the Sweets

Is Chocolate Good for You?
2007: Before a Healthy Lifestyle
What kind of a romantic am I, forgetting Sweetest Day on the 15th?  I even bought a nice card for my hubby early… but did I remember to give it to him?  Nope!  I guess that clarifies that I am not much of a romantic.  It only makes sense, since Jay is the true all-out romantic of the two of us.  Sorry, Hon.  I will be giving you the card now!  Sweetest Day was a little delayed this year.

It is said, Sweetest Day was organized by candy manufacturers to promote the health benefits of eating candy and chocolate every day.  Ummmm…. Well….  Let’s see what we can find, but I’m a bit skeptical, since they include sugar, and I’ve already covered some of the reasons sugar is not a good thing.

I found some great information quickly at “What You Can Do With Nutrition To Prevent Breast Cancer” in which Kimberly Roberto states:  Cacao is a “raw form of chocolate… rich in Flavanols (powerful antioxidants) which are highly absorbable by the body.  Cacao has a phenomenal ORAC score of over 433,000.  CAUTION: Don’t get too excited and load up on chocolate bars.  This is not a free pass at the dessert counter either.  Most chocolate is loaded with other additions like milk products and sugar.  Stick with raw cacao powder – add it to smoothies, yogurt, or mix with avocado and stevia for a mousse-like dessert.”

You can learn about some “healthy” chocolate and then order it through Beyond Organic.

Here might be a good spot to quote a great doctor I know, “The overall quality of your health is determined by the quality of your habits.”

Tell me something.  What can you do to maximize your nutrition this week?  Do you have some bad habits to break, or maybe some good habits to start?  Give it some thought, and then have fun improving!

“You've captured my heart, dear friend.
You looked at me, and I fell in love.
One look my way and I was hopelessly in love!”

Mick’s in Pain

The x-ray of my son's foot after he stepped on a nail... ouch!
What do you do for pain?
All this mountain climbing and vacuuming is making me a bit sore.  How about you?

What do you do for minor aches and pains?  Do you take ibuprofen or aspirin, etc., or do you prefer the more natural way with blueberries, bromelain, etc.?

Even though there is research trying to link ibuprofen and Alzheimer’s in a good way, there is still danger.  “Ibuprofen may cause life-threatening heart or circulation problems such as heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term.” (Drugs.com) … Plus…  “Long-term use of NSAIDs carries a risk of gastrointestinal problems.” (US News Health Buzz)

What are some of those GI problems?

Internal bleeding may be caused as a side effect of medications (most often from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin) and alcohol.  These substances can cause inflammation and bleeding of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, the first part of the small intestine as it leaves the stomach.” (MedicineNet.com)

“According to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the use of low-dose aspirin increases the risk for GI bleeding, with the risk being increased further with accompanying use of cardiovascular disease-preventing therapies, such as clopidogrel and anticoagulants.  In patients who took proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), bleeding risk decreased.” (Science Daily via EurekAlert!)

“It is estimated that approximately 120,000 people are hospitalized each year with gastrointestinal bleeding due to NSAID use.  Conservative estimates are that 16,500 die as a result.” (Jeff Sargent on Natural Health Informer)

I used to take ibuprofen on a regular basis, but I am surprised and very glad to be able to say I haven’t taken any ibuprofen (nor cold meds) for a year!  It’s an amazing process:  change what you put into your body (such as sugar, grains/flour, bad oils, etc., which cause inflammation and toxicity), and eventually you can cut out some of the other things you used to feel like you had to put into your body (toxins, like pain relievers, allergy medicines, etc.).  Some people refer to the bad stuff as man-made foods and the good stuff as God foods.  I like that.  It’s a good reminder.

Which would you rather do… be uncomfortable for a little while, as you change your intake… orrisk your health for some temporary relief?  I think I know which one your family would choose for you.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,
do it all for the glory of God. “
1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

Mick’s up Moms

This is dedicated to all the moms out there!
Being that this blog from a mom’s perspective has the goal to help families live healthier, and because it’s my mother-in-law’s birthday, today’s post is dedicated to moms.

I asked some friends of mine (who in the recent past have discovered a new lifestyle including running) for some words of wisdom, from a healthy mom’s perspective.  Enjoy!

Jenny writes:
Happy Birthday, Mom W.!
♪♫ Happy birthday, Mom W!♫♪
“My experience with healthy family life really evolved out of my own up and down weight.  I did not start out teaching my girls healthy habits.  I admit they have eaten their share of frozen chicken nuggets and fries.  I was not much of a cook early in their lives.  As I learned more about how I needed to eat to feel better and maintain a healthy weight, I also learned how to cook.  This is not always greeted with enthusiasm by my kids, but they have learned to try new things and even grown very fond of many great healthy dishes.  Lets face it, cooking at home is so much better and cheaper.  Oh and letting my kids help in the kitchen has increased their awareness of what they eat and gotten them more excited about it. I also was very aware, as a mother of girls, that I needed to lead by example.  There are frightening statistics on teen and preteen girls and eating disorders.  So I wanted to lead by example.  I cook healthy, eat regular meals, and work out at least a few days a week.  I also discovered that a one month membership to the Y was cheaper than one evening out to dinner and a movie with my family.  As a family, we discovered the beautiful area in which we live and do some hiking.  I won't say we never eat out or enjoy a less than healthy treat but we do so in moderation.”

Stay tuned for Shannon's writing:
“[Shannon's awesomeness entered here!]”

Some quick ideas for healthier nutrition for the family can be found in the resource I have used for the past year to get my family to our current improved state of health, which is the Maximized Living Nutrition Plan book by B. Lerner, BJ Hardick and K. Roberto.  It has similarities to the Paleo Diet or Raw Diet or Primal Diet… but it is less raw, much better, yummier, easier to follow, and more family-friendlyHave fun exploring!

A fellow blogger Carla Gardiner of CarlaJGardiner.com posted an article that fits well with today’s Mick’s up Life:  Why Do People Sabotage My Health Plan?  Enjoy… and become inspired!

“A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,

She speaks with wisdom,

She watches over the affairs of her household

Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:

It’s a Mick's of Toxins

Where do we find toxins? With all this talk of toxins, you may be wondering, “Where do we find toxins and why are they everywhere?”

It’s crazy.  I never used to worry about this stuff.  I thought only "extremists" got hung up on avoiding everything “normal.”  I had no desire to be part of that life.

Then I started thinking beyond myself.

It finally hit me.  Why do I want to be selfish and not change my lifestyle to make a healthier family?  Why do I want to curse my children and my husband with unhealthy living, just so I don’t have to go out of my comfort zone?

I love my family more than that!

So, I took a deep breath, and dove in.

I really dove in!  I chose to stop buying anything now considered “junk food” by the new definition.  All recipes were altered to follow guidelines I was given, and really yummy new recipes jumped to the top of the list of favorites.  The kitchen got emptied of its toxic items:  food and hardware.  Ingredient lists were read on EVERYTHING, and the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room were filled with new healthy choices.

Shopping and cooking took a bit longer in those first days (and months).  OK, more than a bit… but it had become a decision as serious as life or death.  Do I want to make things easier on me, at the risk of filling my  husband with toxins, killing him slowly, and possibly leading him into a life of torture with such illnesses as Alzheimer’s Disease?  Do I want to teach my children to live in such a way that would increase their risks of suffering from heart disease or cancer?

Simply, the answer to all of that is, “NO!”

I still don’t consider us extremists or nutcases.  We simply look at ingredients of all things we purchase, and do our best to minimize the toxins we allow into our home and our bodies.
What kinds of things do we look for, and what can we normal, ordinary, every-day families do about it?

The Toxic Top 10 is a great reference, for example:
  • Cleaning/Personal Care Products:  When considering ingredients, if you can’t eat it, don’t use it.
  • Pesticides and Herbicides:  Follow the list of Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen
  • Meats/Protein:  There are so many hormones and antibiotics injected into our food sources these days, and there are many harmful effects.  We look for grass-fed beef, raw-milk products, free-range poultry and eggs, and we avoid pork.  A great source is:  Beyond Organic
  • Preservatives/Additives/Rancid Fats/etc.
    • Neurotoxins/Excitotoxins: We do not consume any product with any artificial/chemical sweetener, such as sucralose/splenda, aspartame, saccharin, ace-k, neotame, nor with MSG (see next bullet).
    • MSG: There are many products with this in it. Many of you already know the effects MSG can have on a body, because you’re already suffering from such things as headaches. Other MSG-containing ingredients to look out for are yeast extract, torula yeast, autolyzed or hydrolyzed vegetable proteins.  Mike Adams has a book to help you look for the things to avoid in the grocery store. Pick up a copy of Grocery Warning System to fill your grocery cart with healing foods, and stop being one of the 95% of Americans who fill their carts with ingredients known to cause cancer!
    • Sugar:  We stay away from buying foods with sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and we go so far as to stay away from even natural ones (to keep inflammation down as much as possible), such as evaporated cane juice, rice syrup, barley malt, honey, and agave nectar (although we sometimes splurge with allowing agave-sweetened foods or honey).  We can choose alternatives for our Sweeteners.
    • Rancid Fats/OilsMark’s Daily Apple touches on what to avoid.

  • Pots and Pans:  We threw out our Teflon and other unsafe non-stick kitchen items.
  • Environment/Biotoxins/Molds:  Check around your house, and keep it as safe as possible.  Fight off toxins with a detox for your body, like the one my family uses:  Daily Detox
  • Medicines:  Stay away!  Find alternatives, when possible!  Incorporate 5 simple steps to healthy living, to reduce inflammation and toxicity, and to get your brain’s messages throughout your entire body, and to have healthy cells that can function properly.  Then your body can begin to heal, and  you can eventually get off your meds.  (My husband and I did!  Yay!)

It’s a Mick’s up with Cancer Information

bcancerawarenessmonth
It seems everywhere we turn we are reminded it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I think it’s a great tribute to all those who have suffered because of this and other cancers.  It is my guess that those people do not wish the same suffering on anyone else, and so we, as their loved ones, should take it seriously enough to be taking all possible precautions to be cancer-free

Here are some stats: "Breast cancer death rates have declined steadily since 1990.  The drop has been larger among women under 50 (3.2% per year) than among women over 50 (2.0% per year).
An estimated 230,480 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2011.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, after skin cancer. Breast cancer accounts for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in women." (Learn About Cancer)

As you find out, when you take the quiz on Breast Cancer Myths Debunked: you are not doomed to cancer from genetics; you should keep a healthy weight; signs of cancer are not always obvious; alcohol intake increases your risks; sweating helps your body detox; breastfeeding decreases your risks.  I highlighted these particular statements, because they emphasize where I’m headed with this week’s toxicity topic. We determined in Mick's Max Workout that you are not doomed to being out of shape.  Well, take heart: you are not doomed to cancer, either.  Don’t give up, even if you have a family history of cancer.  There is hope!  Do what you can to take precautions.  Since we’re addressing minimizing toxins this week , the last of the 5 Essentials my family follows, it’s a great time to tie it all in with awareness.

Thankfully, I have not had to deal with anything so serious in my life at this point.  The closest I got personally was when a lump was detected a few years ago.  I wasn’t yet 40 years old, but I was sent for a mammogram and the results caused enough concern to send me for an ultrasound.  I’m thankful it didn’t get further than that.  The test determined it is a cyst.  Even though my husband and I had prepared ourselves for the worst, we were ever-so-thankful for that good news.  Now, he and I are doing what we can to avoid another scare, as well as pass the lifestyle on to our kidderz.

I think it’s important to take precautions, but I have my reasons for not liking the idea of regular mammograms.  There are some debates about the safety and the necessity of mammograms, which gives more attention to alternative techniques, such as Digital Tomosynthesis.  Most of us will be relieved to hear the recommended age to begin regular mammograms is now 50 years old, and then only every-other year.  You can read more at:  Science Daily, Can Tomosynthesis Find Breast Cancer Better Than Mammography, Healthy Body Daily

“Perhaps most troublesome is that mammograms aren't lifesaving for all women, though many people assume they are.  Statistics vary, but at best, they only reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer by up to 20%.  ‘We've made it sound like every cancer can be found early and cured, and that's not true,’ says Susan Love, MD.  Mammograms miss many cancers, particularly the fast-growing, aggressive ones that are most likely to strike women under age 50.  ‘Mammograms are best at finding the slow-growing, low-grade cancers, not the worst ones,’ she says.” (Lauren Gelman of Prevention)

Early detection is a wonderful thing. Don’t get me wrong.  This Spring, early detection allowed my mother-in-law to begin addressing decisions to change her lifestyle (improving her exercise and already-healthy diet) to combat the cancer cells in her body before it was too late, and now she is on the road to healing.  We plan on having her around for a very long time!

"’The most important thing young women can do right now to reduce their risk of breast cancer down the road is to develop healthy lifestyle habits, such as limiting their alcohol intake, maintaining a healthy weight, and adding exercise to their routine,’ says Susan Brown, RN, director of health education at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.” (Beth Howard of Prevention)

A Maximized Living Webinar coming up this month of October will cover the following topics:
  • Breast Cancer Statistics Today
  • What the Government is doing to address the epidemic
  • Where is all the research money going?
  • The difference between early detection/treatment and prevention. What does cure mean?
  • The facts about breast cancer causes
  • What you can do to prevent breast cancer and raise awareness!

Also, hear how companies offering bad nutrition choices, which can lead to cancer, are jumping on the bandwagon of breast cancer awareness:  Susan G Komen for the Cure Isn't Curing Anything

Mick’s sum up:
We should all be responsible enough to take precautions, when it comes to taking care of our body.  Some ways to try to avoid cancer are exercising, healthy eating, and keeping toxins lowMick's in the Oxygen last week explained Exercise = oxygen = healthy cells!  Later posts will discuss the nutrition and toxins.  What better reason to be on the road to a healthier lifestyle than for your family!?!  What’s stopping you?!

Take care of the body God gave you…
and then you can take care of the family God gave you!

Well done, good and faithful servant!
You have been faithful with a few things;
I will put you in charge of many things.
Come and share your master’s happiness!’”

Mick's up with the Cold Results

Praying Mantis Along for the Ride!
Hang on!
“The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?” Proverbs 18:14 (NIV)

We made it through the week!  Yay!  It’s the weekend!  Did it feel like you’d never get here?

Maybe you feel like the Praying Mantis that went along for a ride to the store… on the outside of our car!  That tough guy hung onto the side-view mirror that entire 5-mile drive.  My daughter, even though a little afraid of the idea of the bug getting close to her, kept a close watch on it, cheering it on.  “Hang in there, little guy!”  We encouraged it, and it would look at us through the window, like it understood, but at the same time communicating, “What have you done to me?!”  Even while we ran in to the store, it stayed in its temporary home.  So, of course, the drive home again included, “Hang on!”

That’s our encouragement to you, too.  Hang on!  You’ll make it!  It’s not much further!

I can encourage you, because I’ve been encouraged.  We made it!  Remember the experiment in Monday’s post, Mick's Scoop on Sugar(I promised you an update.)  Even though our household started off the week with a bunch of sickies, feeling like we couldn’t be more miserable, we kept up with the Vitamin D3, increased water intake, soothing hot tea, sunshine when we could get it, sleep, and decreased sugar intake.  We made it!  We’re feeling better!  Our experiment certainly was not scientific, nor was it planned.  However, since over the past year we have been so faithful with our chiropractic care, nutrition, and overall healthier lifestyle... and have not felt this sick for this long during this same year, until our recent hiatus, we can now, even more confidently, say the 5 Essentials make for a healthier, happier family.

Enjoy a mom's perspective in this Mick’s up Life’s collection of blog posts, to get a handle on the 5 Essentials.  Then do your research and make the choice to live life as a healthier you... and have fun truly living with your healthy family!

Hang in there!  You can do it!
